Positive Behaviour Support for Individuals with Autism: Respectful, Individualised, Neurodiversity-Affirming

At Liberty Behavioural Services, we offer Autism Behavioural Support grounded in compassion, respect, and a deep understanding of neurodiversity. We provide Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) to individuals with autism focusing on empowering people to live fulfilling lives, on their own terms.

We celebrate each individual’s unique way of thinking, communicating, and experiencing the world. When behaviours of concern arise, we work to understand why and use this insight to build practical, personalised strategies that support communication, reduce distress, and foster independence.

Understanding Behaviour Through a Neurodiversity Lens

Many behaviours labelled as “challenging” are actually expressions of unmet needs, sensory overload, communication differences, or a response to environments that aren’t supportive. We never view behaviours in isolation – instead, we explore the context, history, and meaning around them.

Our Behaviour Support Practitioners work alongside individuals with autism, their families, and support teams to:
  • Conduct respectful, trauma-informed functional behaviour assessments
  • Develop individualised PBS plans that focus on strengths and preferences
Support communication methods that work for the individual (verbal, AAC, non-verbal, etc.)
  • Address sensory needs, anxiety triggers, and emotional regulation
  • Reduce reliance on restrictive practices and increase meaningful choice and control

Support That Makes Sense for Everyday Life

We understand that every person is different. Whether we’re supporting a young person struggling with transitions, a teen navigating social anxiety or an adult building independence in daily living, we tailor our plans to the individual’s goals and environment.

Some of the areas we commonly support include:

  • Emotional regulation and coping strategies
  • Understanding and managing sensory sensitivities
  • Skill-building for independence and daily routines
  • Navigating social situations and relationships
  • Reducing distress behaviours through proactive supports

We Collaborate with the Whole Support Network

Our Autism Behavioural Support services are designed to fit within your life not the other way around. We collaborate closely with:

  • Parents, carers, and family members
  • Support workers and disability service providers
  • Speech therapists, OTs, psychologists, and allied health professionals
  • Schools, educators, and community organisations

This holistic, team-based approach ensures consistency, clarity, and positive outcomes across all areas of life.
